Speaking of thermal mass
No, it isn't a religious statement, but it does have much to do with hot air. It is the combination of draft, a Rocket Stove, and radiation of heat, and a place to warm your buns while you sit and read.
Several countries around the world have develop a heater using similar themes.
- The Roman Hypocaust
- Tile Heaters
- Franklin Stove
- Grupka
- Masonry Heater
The burn temperature is quite high, maybe in the range of 1,100*F, and because it isn't smoldering like an air-tight stove, it burns everything leaving almost no ash. Similar to passive heating of thermal batteries in the walls, this more active approach takes very small volumes and pieces of wood to heat a bench through its buried exhaust chimney that eventually get vented out a vertical opening some 20-feet away. The thermal mass of the bench or 'banquito' stores heat generated in 3-4 hours and radiates the heat for 24-hours.
